Sinus Lift
Prepare the Upper Jaw for Dental Implants
Behind your cheeks, there are empty, air-filled spaces called maxillary sinuses. Some roots of the upper teeth extend into the maxillary sinuses and when they are removed, there is only a thin wall left behind that separates the sinus from the mouth. A thin sinus wall makes it difficult to place dental implants because there is not enough stability. In these cases, we will perform a sinus lift.
A sinus lift is one of the most common bone grafting procedures and treats upper jaw bone loss. Also known as a sinus augmentation, this procedure improves the success rate of the dental implant and restores integrity to the jaw bone.
Dr. Liberty can perform sinus lifts at our offices in El Dorado Hills, Folsom, and Auburn, CA. Contact Golden Foothills Oral, Facial, & Dental Implant Surgery to schedule your appointment and we will create your custom treatment plan.
When Is a Sinus Lift Necessary?
We may recommend a sinus lift if there is insufficient jaw bone in the upper jaw to support a dental implant. Other cases which may require a sinus augmentation include:
- If you are missing one or more teeth in the back of your jaw
- If you have experienced significant jaw bone loss
- If you are missing teeth because of a birth defect or medical condition
- If you are missing most of your teeth and require a stronger foundation for dental implants
How Is a Sinus Lift Accomplished?
During your first visit, you will meet with one of our oral surgeons. We will examine your oral health and create a treatment plan for your specific needs. We will also discuss your anesthesia options prior to surgery so that you can feel comfortable and at ease. Using advanced 3D scans, our surgeons can analyze the health of your jaw bone and facial structures.
A sinus lift is a part of the dental implant treatment for patients with insufficient upper jaw bone. If a sinus lift will be a part of your treatment, we will walk you through the steps beforehand.
When performing the sinus lift procedure, your oral surgeon will make a small incision in the upper premolar or molar region and lift the sinus upward. Your surgeon will fill the underlying space with bone grafting material and use sutures to close the incision. Over the next several months, the bone graft will heal and new bone will form and you are ready to receive your dental implant.
In some cases, we can perform a sinus lift procedure and place a dental implant in the same surgical visit. This depends on if there is enough upper jaw bone available to stabilize the implant enough while the bone graft heals.
